Rick received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University in music, and his law degree from The Ohio State University. Since the early 1990s, he has focused exclusively on elder and disability law, including trust and estate planning, qualification for Medicaid benefits, disability planning through the use of special needs trusts, and nursing home and assisted living facility placement. Rick enjoys the client counseling and problem-solving sides of elder and disability law. He is frequently appointed by the courts as a Guardian ad Litem to protect the rights of vulnerable adults.

Rick is a member of the Boulder County Bar Association and the Colorado Bar Association. Rick is a frequent speaker on elder law issues, Medicaid and Long Term Care planning, estate planning, and other topics affecting aging adults and their families. A strong believer in giving to the community, Rick served for 5 years as a commissioner on the Housing Authority of the City of Boulder and as a board member and chair of the board for TRU Community Care Hospice. Rick regularly performs pro bono legal work for Boulder County Legal Services. In his free time, Rick enjoys singing, hiking, woodworking, and spending time with his wife and six children.
